His seminal work ''Al-Mīzan al-Kubra'' (The Supreme Scale) compares the rulings of all four Sunni schools of
sharia as if they were a single school. He considered the differences, according to their difficulty, as either strictness ('azima) or dispensation (
rukhsa).
